Another question for those with more experience:

Since my DH was issued his glucometer, he has been pretty good about checking his sugars.  One morning, it was at 147, but that is the highest it has been.  The pattern, every day, seems to start out high and then, no matter what he eats, his sugar level just goes downhill.  He had about two and a half normal meals for supper, plus lots of snacks, but 3 hours later, his sugar was around 74.

I'm not yet familiar enough with all of this to know - is this at all a reasonable pattern???

  1. It doesn't seem right to me
Tom's goal is to between 90 and 110
while that is fairly narrow range
    I don't know if 74 to 147 is a good range
Is he ok at 74? or does he show signs of being low?

it sounds to me like an adjustment to the insulin may be appropriate - talk to the docs.....

  2. He doesn't take any meds at all. It's just diet and exercise at this point. He seems to get excessively crabby if his sugar is low, but then, for years, he has gotten excessively crabby if he is overtired, overstressed, or it is past his bedtime. So it's really hard to tell.

Oh - and he gets excessively crabby if other drivers irritate him, which is virtually every time he gets behind the wheel.

I'm making him sound like Oscar the Grouch, but he really isn't. These times tend to really stand out, because they are such an exception to the general rule. Overall, he is one of the kindest, most sweet-natured people I have ever known.

His blood sugar readings have seemed to be pretty much within normal limits (but the nosedive pattern bothers me.) I'm not sure if we even have the right diagnosis. I feel so ignorant. He is being very good about keeping record of his blood sugar levels, so we will ask plenty of questions at our next check-in.

    Thanks!

  3. This is from the perspective of a longtime Type 1... 74 to 130s shouldn't be causing alarm. The "pre-diabetic" and Type 2 range according to the medical minds of the ADA is anything above 110 is dangerous, but that is basically rubbish in my opinion - especially when you're talking morning dawn phenomenon and post-meal blood tests where anyone is going to be higher.
