Another question for those with more experience:

Is it common for people with blood sugar issues to get profoundly sleepy shortly after they eat?  Unless it's a huge pig-out like what sometimes happens at Thanksgiving, I usually have lots of energy after I eat.  My DH, on the other hand, tends to fall asleep, either on the sofa or in his favorite chair.  He likes to have the TV on, but even if the program is absolutely fascinating, he almost always falls asleep.  Is this typical?

Just wondering.

  1. my DH doesn't fall asleep but he tends to run low on the glucose so you probably need to hear from someone whose DH tends to run high...

  2. H seems to be sleeping more and more. I have mentioned this to docs. Sleep apnea is a cause as well as a number of the meds. i think it is the general bad health too.

  3. Mine doesn't usually get sleepy after a meal. He is more likely to get "sleepy" (or actually has low blood sugar) before a meal, or if he did not eat enough to cover the insulin, or if he took too much insulin. Is your hubby a Type 2? Does he take insulin at this point at all?

However, he is sleeping more and more overall, as health is not what it used to be.

  4. @ Lilly: He is a Type 2, recently diagnosed, and not on any medication at all yet. They drew blood for lab work last week but we don't know the results yet.

Our primary care doctor said that if DH can lose about 100 lbs, it is possible that the symptoms of not only diabetes, but also sleep apnea and high blood pressure will go away. I hope he is right. DH has been doing pretty well and is about 1/4 of the way to goal weight. He has also signed up (after I did some investigating into available resources) for classes on diabetes management and a one-on-one consultation with a diabetes education specialist person - a nurse, I think. They are also supposed to give him a monitor.

As of today, I feel encouraged, but as so many of you have said, you never know what will happen tomorrow.
